The Call of Karbala by Dr. John Andrew Morrow

What inspires millions of Shi‘a, Sunnis and Sufis, as well as non-Muslims from all walks of life, to visit Karbala annually? Dr. John Andrew Morrow will offer an account of his 2017 pilgrimage to Karbala during Arba‘in, a religious commemoration that occurs forty days after the martyrdom of Imam Husayn.

The Sacrifice of Husayn by Sayyid Hadi Qazwini

Why was the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, Imam Husayn, martyred? Sayyid Hadi Qazwini will discuss the political and social circumstances people lived under during the reign of the Umayyad Empire. He will also discuss the spiritual and ethical significance of Husayn’s resistance and subsequent martyrdom.

The Leadership of Zaynab by Sister Nicole Correri

Sister Nicole Correri will explore the hagiography of Sayyidah Zaynab, the sister of Imam Husayn, who courageously confronted those responsible for the tragedy at Karbala. She will also discuss Zaynab’s significant role as the interim leader between the Third and Fourth Imams, Husayn and Zayn al-‘Abidin.

Dinner will be served at 6:30pm.
For every meal served at our events, we will donate a meal to someone in need.

Biographies

Dr. John Andrew Morrow (Imam Ilyas Islam) is the Director of the Covenants Initiative. He is a proud member of the Michif-Ottipemisiwak Nation who embraced Islam at the age of 16. Dr. Morrow completed his PhD at the University of Toronto where he studied Hispanic, Native, and Islamic Studies. In addition to his academic studies, Dr. Morrow completed the full cycle of traditional Islamic seminary studies both independently and at the hands of a series of Sunni, Shi‘i and Sufi scholars. He has authored a large body of scholarly works, including The Covenants of the Prophet Muhammad with the Christians of the World (2013), Restoring the Balance (2016), and Islam and the People of the Book (2017).

Sayyid Hadi Qazwini is an educator, public speaker, and lecturer in Islamic studies. Sayyid Hadi is a graduate of the Shi‘i Islamic Seminary of Qum, where he received training in the traditional religious sciences under the guidance of many prominent Islamic scholars. He received his BA in Sociology from the University of California, Irvine and his MA in Theology, Islamic Studies and Leadership from Claremont School of Theology and Bayan Claremont in Claremont, California. Sayyid Hadi is currently pursuing his PhD in Religion with a concentration in Islam at the University of Southern California. His areas of academic interest and research include Islamic intellectual history, with a focus on Imami Shi‘i theology, law, ritual, and culture. Sayyid Hadi resides in Southern California with his wife and three children.

Sister Nicole Correri, MA, MEd, one of the preeminent female Shi‘i speakers in North America, aims to motivate the Muslim community to strive toward the ideals of Islam. With her academic background and passion for the religion, she is a powerful voice for English-speaking Muslims in the West. She imparts relevant and meaningful Islamic content to audiences the world over with her well-researched work, guiding them to think, reflect and act. She never fails to lend her voice to the cause of justice in the spirit of Fatimah al-Zahra and Zaynab bint ‘Ali, peace be upon them. She has studied Arabic with the Fawakih Institute since 2012. Nicole earned her Master’s degree in Islamic Studies and Christian-Muslim Relations at Hartford Seminary and is currently a Ph.D. student in Islamic Studies at Boston University.
