Biographies

Amir Sulaiman is a poet, screenwriter and producer born in Rochester, New York. His poems focus on love and tragedy, as well as what it means to reconcile humanity with the unprecedented trials of modernity. He has performed across the US, as well as in England, Belgium, Senegal, Saudi Arabia, Sweden, Australia, Iran and the Netherlands. His recently published book of poetry, Love, Gnosis & Other Suicide Attempts met with critical acclaim. His latest album "The Opening" is the third in a unique trilogy project, following "The Meccan Openings" (2011) and "The Medinan Openings" (2012). Amir was first introduced to a National audience in 2004 when he was featured for two seasons on the groundbreaking series Def Poetry Jam on HBO. He is also the host of Cornerstore Folklore, a new documentary series that explores and celebrates poetry from around the world.

Ahlaam Abduljalil is an East-African-Arab-American poet, writer and storyteller. For over a decade she has performed in various communities across the globe and has discovered the power of the spoken word and its ability to be a bridge to understanding. With a full scholarship to Mount Holyoke College, Ahlaam is continuing her education with a focus on creative writing as a tool to heal from inter-generational trauma.

Abbas Mohamed has a huge appetite for life and what is beyond. He is involved in community projects focused on food, poetry, and the arts with organizations that include GAMA, Compassion Crew, and Halalfest. Abbas has been writing poetry since 2008 and humbly presents this collection as an offering of peace and blessings. You can find him on Instagram at @babyshamss.

Nile Mystic is a lover of words and feelings. She was conceived in the longest kiss, the confluence of the Blue and the White Nile. She was nurtured in the rich cultures of the Persian/Arabian Gulf. Her artistic heart has been blooming in the beautiful coasts of North America. Her love for poetry started when she was a toddler listening to her two grandmothers in Sudan improvising beautiful lullabies full of poetic praises. Then her love grew more when she came across the poetry of Mevlana Rumi. Rumi’s poetry helped her turn her feelings into poetry. Through poetry she found an avenue to express her hidden feelings and discoveries.

GAMA LogoGAMA (Gathering All Muslim Artists) is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting and empowering artists from Muslim communities, while at the same time fostering a culture of creative expression and community support. Our vision is to build a platform that nurtures Muslim artists in order to weave the arts back into the mainstream Muslim narrative and to develop a culture of creativity and patronage within the broader Muslim community. Our mission is to provide opportunities for Muslim artists, to advocate for the arts in the broader Muslim community, and to change the narrative about Islam in the United States and beyond using visual art and creativity. This event will have a visual art exhibition consisting of works from local and international GAMA artists.
